If this is your first dog or cat, make sure you know how to care for this pet. There are many books at your local library or pet supply store on how to care for pets.
Can you afford the pet? If this will be your first pet, find out the cost of food, supplies, training, licensing and regular veterinary care.
Make sure no in the family has allergies
