  The People Behind the Scenes

The Gang in Gray and the Animal Control Officers came together as a great team to support the needs of these dogs.  We thought you might like to "meet" just a few of them.

This is Heather Mehi, Friends Shelter Manager, and Animal Control Officer, Jim Longley working at the house.

Jim later bonded with this adorable rescued pup shown at right.

The Gang in Gray

If you have visited the shelter or attended a Friends event, you probably have noticed all the heathered gray T-shirts with the Friends logo on the front.  On the back is either "Staff" or "Volunteer".  Why gray?  We use bleach solutions to clean areas of the shelter and this is the only color that doesn't immediately show any splashes.

If you called or came in, you probably met our office gang - Heather, Brandi (in the blue jacket, Brandi also worked to rescue the dogs inside the house), April (receptionist, back right), and Linda (our Dog Trainer, front right).  Shown at right are Danielle, Office Manager, and Gina, assistant.

If you emailed us, you "met" Judy, our volunteer who does a superb job of handing all the Friends email.

Our Executive Director, Elaine, was in her first day of a well deserved vacation when the rescue started.  She put the vacation on hold and came back to help.  In addition to her managerial responsibilities, she is a Licensed Veterinary Technician, and fully utilized these skills those first days.

If you mailed us, our bookkeeper, Suzanne, handled your letters.  For many days, the post office delivered in big "totes".

Shown at left are Volunteer Coordinator, Laura Sorensen, and Medical Technicians Courtney (middle) and Cheryl (at right).  Both Courtney and Cheryl are in school to become Licensed Veterinary Technicians.   Laura has been serving as the central coordinator, getting needs from staff and dispatching volunteers to handle them.  Courtney, Animal Evaluator, and Cheryl, Assistant Evaluator, already had their handles full, but the needs of the Chihuahuas at least quadrupled their workload.

Ken, is our Kennel Supervisor, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to set up crates, store donated goods, etc. etc.

Will works with volunteer (and wonderful foster mom) Peggy to give the dogs a little air and sunshine after they were bathed.

Our Development Director, Kelle Sisung, had a horrible cold, but was there to greet visitors and handle donated supplies.

To handle the extra work, we've hired four additional part time staff.  Fortunately, we had amazing volunteers who were ready to step up to the task.

Daily cage cleaning gets done by both staff and volunteers.  Note that the dog at right is administering a welcomed thank you kiss.

Volunteers, Karen of Feline Friends is shown at left and Carol at right.

Dr. Kari Nugent of Unleashed Mobile Veterinary Services (shown at left) is just one of the vets helping to check out, sterilize, and perform dentals on the next Chihuahuas that will be going to new homes.

If you have completed a volunteer application since the rescue began, thank you.  We certainly can use the help, but we and our insurance require that all new volunteers complete an orientation session.   Volunteers who wish to work with the animals, are required to complete an extra level of intensive training -- both for their safety and for the safety of the animals.  We will get you scheduled for an orientation.  If you are interested in becoming a Friends volunteer, you'll be joining a GREAT team - please click here.

If you are a registered Friends volunteer, thank you and please see Laura's posting of what is needed most.

Al is a Dearborn Animal Control officer
and was a rescuer in the house.
