Their New Families -- Love at Last!
(Adoption Photos and Stories continued on the next page)

The first six of the Chihuahuas rescued two weeks ago from a uninhabitable house went to their new homes on Thursday, August 6.  It was a party -- a celebration for the "re-birth" of these wonderful little dogs that truly deserve a second chance at happiness.    Guests enjoyed cake and sparkling grape juice served in champagne glasses.

The new adoptive families had the honor of blowing out the candles.

Each dog received a boxed Certificate of Adoption complete with their photo and paw print, a new carrier with a handmade puppy bed, and a pink gift bag filled with treats and their paperwork.

Som eagerly awaits his new home.

The celebration was attended by Dearborn Mayor O'Reilly and City Council members Nancy Hubbard, George Darany, Mark Shooshanian, and Doug Thomas.

It was also attended by several members of the media to whom we will remain ever grateful for assisting us in getting funds and homes for these wonderful dogs.  Friends Executive Director, Elaine Greene handed the dogs to their new families.

Dearborn Mayor Jack O'Reilly, who attended Thursday's adoption event, praised the hard work of the Shelter staff and the compassion of its many volunteers.

"This is an extraordinary thing, and none of it would have been possible without the dedicated and compassionate people involved," he said. "We are truly blessed in Dearborn to have this relationship with the Dearborn Animal Shelter and its volunteers, who have proven that they're ready to take on any challenge."

Friends Shelter Manager Heather Mehi gives Miko a best wishes kiss.  It was two weeks to the day that Heather rescued Miko from the house.

Friends Staff members Danielle and Brandi look on with joyful pride (and stand ready to get the adoption contracts signed).  Brandi was one of the rescuers inside the house and Danielle ran the shelter as the dogs were brought in.

Just one example of the amazing teamwork demonstrated by the entire community for these dogs -- this is a representative from PetCo and also one from PETSMART (coincidentally, a long time Friends volunteer).

Next Steps

Given the joy of this day, it is easy to forget that the little pup shown at left shows the condition most of the dogs were in when they were rescued -- at a minimum, thin and afraid.  The dogs that went home this first day were among the first to become socialized and healthy.  The adoptors were selected from among the first of the applications submitted.

This process will continue.  Approximately 40 more dogs are now ready to go home and an equal number of approved applicants will be contacted over the next two weeks to come meet their new family member.  Some of the dogs have special needs and will need to be on medication the rest of their lives.  Some people who filed adoption applications indicated that they are willing to take and care for special needs dogs.  It will be an ongoing preparation and matching process until every rescued dog has a new home.

We hope to take a photo of every adoption and share them with you here - so please check back.

Please remember that we have many other wonderful adoptable pets waiting for their new loving home too!  Check them out..

Jerry and Kim Ankofski of Dearborn were kind enough to allow our Petparazzi, Ed Serecky to follow them home to capture Matador's first moments in his new home.

First look! Oh boy!!
