Next Steps - "One Dog at a Time"

We sincerely appreciate your patience.  Given the joy of the first adoption day, it is easy to forget the severity of the conditions that these dogs endured and that the little pup shown at right is only one example of the state that most of the dogs were in when they were rescued -- at a minimum, thin and afraid.  The dogs that went home that first day were among the first to become healthy and socialized.  The adoptors were selected from among the first of the applications submitted.

This adoption pairing process continues as we strive to place all of the Chihuahuas one dog at a time We give this same level of care and attention to every single animal that comes into our care.  They each deserve it.  Given the volume of Chihuahuas received and the fact that many of the dogs had never had any veterinary care or socialization, this process  is taking time to complete for each dog.

Please remember that in addition to their own personalities, some of the dogs have special medical and emotional needs. We are grateful that some people who filed adoption applications indicated that they are willing to take and care for special needs dogs.

Current Status:

Since August 6 when the first 6 dogs went home, they’ve been going home almost daily.

Over 70 have been adopted and another 15 are in our foster homes (as of September 30).

Calls have been made to our more than 500 adoption applicants.

All the dogs are receiving medical attention - being spayed or neutered and many have needed dental procedures and other medical treatments.

A few are being seen by specialists (oncololgy, cardiac, and orthopedic).

Should you wish to donate, we still need puppy pads to help house train these dogs.

This is an ongoing matching process and we appreciate your patience until we find every rescued dog a new home, one dog at a time.

Please remember that we have
many other wonderful adoptable pets
waiting for their new loving home too!
  Check them out..

To our Adoption Applicants

Thank you for your application and interest in the Chihuahuas.  Currently, our first priority is caring for the dogs, including medical care for many of them before they are able to be adopted.  Many of the dogs have never had appropriate veterinary care, so the process is taking some time. During this period, we have identified a few dogs that are socialized enough for adoption once their health and medical care is managed. Unfortunately, many of the dogs need more involved socialization time before they can be placed in homes.

If you were one the more than 500 applications for these dogs, thank you.  We are in the process of screening applicants carefully to select the best matches for them. Because of the severity of the conditions that the dogs endured, some lasting scars, medical conditions or behavioral issues may remain.  It is our responsibility to ensure that these dogs end up in the care of patient, understanding, and compassionate adopters who will provide loving forever homes.

A specific timeline on the process of identifying these matches is difficult to provide, but rest assured we are working tirelessly to place each dog with its best match, some sooner than others.  Those applicants that have not been contacted for recent adoptions, will be contacted again, to gauge their interest in waiting for the Chihuahuas that are not yet ready to be adopted.

We truly appreciate your understanding and patience in this process as together we wish the best for these little dogs.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 20, 2009

Dearborn, Michigan.  The Dearborn Animal Shelter is proud that the first 22 Chihuahuas were sent to their forever homes, where they will get the affection and care they need for the rest of their happy lives. With many more to place into homes over the next few months, the shelter assures that each one will be placed One Dog at a Time.

It has been three weeks since 105 Chihuahuas were rescued from the Dearborn home where they were isolated indoors never able to leave the house or see sunlight. Since receiving the dogs, the Dearborn Animal Shelter, along with countless volunteers, have  worked tirelessly to assess the dogs’ personalities and health issues. Staff and volunteers   gave the dogs long overdue check-ups, shots, sterilizations and other medical necessities – as well as spending time with them and giving them the love and care- they had been without some for their entire lives.

In addition to a wonderful outpouring of volunteers and letters of sympathy and encouragement, the shelter was pleased to receive more than 500 applications for adoption of these lovable pups.

“I want to express our heartfelt thank you for the enormous support we received from the metro Detroit community in the midst of this unusual circumstance,” said Elaine Greene, Executive Director, Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter.  She continued, “This is the single largest influx of dogs from one location in our history and it brought the kindest of people to our doors to help.”                                Read the entire Press Release ...
