In the past month, the Dearborn Animal Shelter has had so many cats surrendered or picked up as strays that occupancy is at a critical level. The facility only has a limited amount of space to house all the animals and currently is at maximum capacity.
“We are out of room,” said Executive Director Elaine Greene. “There are too many cats for the space available – currently we have 273 cats and kittens in our system. Fortunately, about a third are in foster homes, which helps a lot. But we desperately need to find good homes for all of the kittens and cats, young and old, that are available for adoption.” |
The shelter asks anyone who is interested in making a cat a part of their family
to come for a visit and see all of the friendly felines available for adoption.
The adoption fee of $90 for kittens and $80 for cats covers the initial
vaccines, worming, neutering, leukemia test and microchipping, a value double
the adoption fee. If you adopt a second kitty (a Friend for your new Friend), the
second adoption fee is reduced by 50%. Shelter hours are Monday through Friday,
8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; Saturday, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., closed Sunday.
The Dearborn Animal Shelter is located at 2661 Greenfield Road, Dearborn (one mile south of Michigan Avenue; 1/2 mile south of Rotunda; just south of the viaduct under I-94 on the west side of Greenfield at the intersection of Butler Road). For more information, contact the shelter at 313-943-2077, or visit the website at
