Warm your heart this Valentines Day with a new “Best Friend Forever”
DEARBORN, Mich., January 29, 2009 — Looking for a healthy new relationship this Valentine’s Day? The Dearborn Animal Shelter (DAS) has a suggestion for you: Try adding a loving pet to your life. A pet is good for your physical and emotional health and will be a lifelong faithful companion.
You can find that special furry friend using the DAS “Meet your Match” program, which helps pair you with just the right cat or dog to fit your lifestyle needs.
“Think of it as a version of a Web-based matchmaking service, like e-Harmony for pets and families,“ says Elaine Greene, executive director of the Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter. “You fill out a profile describing the traits that you are seeking in a pet and we will match you with the cat or dog that best fits those characteristics.”
DAS staff evaluator, Linda Thomas, LVT and licensed animal trainer, assesses each animal available for adoption to determine their “feline-ality” or “canine-ality.” Is Coco the cat a cuddler? Or, is she more of an independent, prissy pussycat? Based on the assessment, Coco is placed into a color-coded category and a color-coded card is attached to her cage. If an adopter’s profile indicates he is looking for a cuddler, our staff will direct him to the pink cuddler cards.
Greene continues, “Meet your Match helps us to improve adoption success since we are able find out from adopters what behaviors they want or need in a new family pet.” This is especially important when it comes to dog adoptions. Nearly 50% of all puppies are returned because people did not realize how much time commitment it takes to incorporate them into their home. “Our program helps to curtail this return rate by more closely assessing a pet and his new family before the adoption takes place.”
Meet your Match is easy to use and there is no charge for submitting your application profile; the standard adoption fees will apply when a match is found and you choose to adopt.
Want to see some of the adoptable pets in person and take our Meet your Match survey? You are invited to visit the Shelter during regular hours or stop by any of these upcoming “off-site” adoption events in February:
February 13th -15th 11am-3pm each day; PetSmart in Dearborn, 5650 Mercury Drive at Ford Road
