Feline Finale - Concert and Auction

Bid on a Stray Cat

Benefiting the New Shelter

WELCOME to the Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter Stray Cat Strut

The Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter proudly bring you The Stray Cat Strut - a community-wide, public art display of fiberglass cat sculptures, each sponsored by generous donors and uniquely designed and decorated by prominent local artists.  The summer-long art exhibit raises awareness and assists in generating funds for a greatly needed new animal adoption and education center in the city of Dearborn.

The existing shelter facility is desperately outdated and incapable of handling the current volume of animals, making day-to-day operations difficult for staff, volunteers, and adopting families.  Using The Stray Cat Strut as a catalyst for our fundraising efforts and relying on the kindness and generosity of supporters like you, a new state-of-the-art shelter facility in the heart of Dearborn adjacent to the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center, will soon become a reality.  To add to the excitement, the new center will be a LEED Certified, "Green", environmentally friendly building.  It is truly, an alley cat's dream.

For your viewing pleasure, the Cats will pussfoot their way through the Dearborn and metro Detroit areas from May through September 2005.  Check out the calendar of events for current social commitments and cat viewing locations.

Concluding with a "Feline Finale" on September 16, the stray cats will strut their stuff one last time ... on the auction block.  Selected cats will be auctioned off to the highest bidder at this unforgettable fundraising gala and auction.  Don't miss your chance to call one of these cats your own

Sponsorships, Prestige Packages, and tickets are still available for the September Feline Finale adoption auction event.

The Stray Cats Band

In the 1980s, The Stray Cats band led by American-born Brian Setzer brought a slick 50s rockabilly into the top ten and heavy rotation on MTV. Their 1982 record Built for Speed had three top ten hits: 'Stray Cat Strut', 'Rumble In Brighton' and 'Rock This Town'. It reached number two on the charts, was was a million-seller. The band split in 1984.

Chicago, New York, Las Vegas - London, Sydney, Tokyo and many other cities did Cows on Parade.  Naples, Florida did Gators Galore, Los Angeles did Angels, Lexington did Horses and closer to home, Royal Oak did Polar Bears for the Zoo and Birmingham did Dog Town.  Dearborn, to benefit Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter, is doing Stray Cat Strut -- cats with cat-itude!!

Inspired by Cow Parade

The inspriation for Stray Cat Strut was CowParade - the world’s largest public art event. From Chicago and New York in 1999 and 2000 to Kansas City and Houston in 2001 and London in 2002, CowParade continues to evolve, not just in size, but in creativity and quality of art. While the cow sculptures remain the same, each city’s artists are challenged by the art from past events, inspired by the cultural influences of their respective cities, and moved by their own interpretation of the cow as an art object.  CowParade is not meant to be high art, however. It is first and foremost a public art exhibit that is accessible to everyone.

Most important, CowParade ultimately benefits charity. At the conclusion of each event, the cows are herded up and many are auctioned, with a substantial portion of the proceeds benefiting charity. The Chicago auction raised an amazing $3,000,000.00 for charity, including $1.4 million on-line and $2.1 million at the live auction assisted by Sotheby's. The average bid price on the 140 cows was nearly $25,000, with the top cow, HANDsome, selling for $110,000. The CowParade New York 2000 Charity Auction raised an equally impressive $1,351,000.00 benefiting several New York City charities. The highest winning bid was $ 60,000, for Tiffany Cow. The average bid was $18,257.
