Urgent In-Shelter Needs:   A Special Note to Our Volunteers

It's been a year since our little friends, known as The Chihuahuas, entered our lives, turning the shelter from a calm, quiet place to one of controlled chaos! The Chihuahua Reunion at Mutt Strut was a great success, and we've had many more successes and accomplished a lot so far this year, including a temporary move out, then back into the main shelter. None of this would have been completed without the fierce determination, strong backs and kind hearts of the volunteers!

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank each and every one of our volunteers!

We are currently looking for "seasoned" volunteers that are interested in becoming a project leader for off-site adoption events. We always need volunteers to help with all of our events.

There are ongoing projects like fostering, Youth Advisory Council, and Fido bakery. If you have an interest in any of these or other projects and events, please contact Sue Clifton. We are interested in ideas you may have, too!

If you are not receiving the Volunteer Enews, please contact Sue Clifton at dasclifton@aol.com or by calling 313.943.2697.

Helping with the Animals

Transport Team:  Drivers Wanted! We are looking for volunteers who want to play chauffer!  Animal Transporters are needed transport to drop adopted animals off at vet clinics in the mornings.  Not available in the mornings?  We are also looking for people who can be called for emergency transport, or for trips to the groomer.  Times and commitment may vary.  Contact Heather at dasmehi@aol.com to get behind the wheel!

Dog Tutors:  Sit and Stay with shelter dogs by taking them through one of our classes.  Help your favorite adorable adoptable dogs learn some manners to help them find a home!  Each class last 6 weeks, for an hour each class.  Hopefully, you have enough fun that you would like to take more than one class.  The schedule of classes can be viewed here  and you can sign up by contacting Linda at DASLThomas@aol.com

If you are able to work with the animals and contribute in any of these ways, please contact Sue Clifton at dasclifton@aol.com

Special Events (remember to check the calendar for other upcoming events)

Special Projects

Celebrity SWAT Team:  Help us find potential celebrity partners by uncovering celebrities who are major animal lovers, keeping track of celeb intelligence, and contacting them or their agents for partnerships!  This is a great volunteer job for researchers - anyone who loves surfing the Web and wants to potentially rub elbows with celebs.  We also need celebrity Ambassadors/Corresponders who have excellent phone and writing skills.  This is an ongoing task that can be done from home.  If you are interested, contact Kelle at ksisung@aol.com or 313.724.0675

School Liaison:  Friends for the Dearborn Animal Shelter are eager to kick off some exciting new fundraising opportunities in area schools.  However, we can't do this without a strong volunteer (or team of strong volunteers) to take the lead on this project.  If you enjoy working with students and schools, or have an interest helping raise money for the day to day operations of the shelter, this could be the volunteer opportunity for you!  Contact Kelle Sisung at KSisung@aol.com if you are interested

Fido Bakery Bakers: Love to bake?  Put your kitchen skills to good use by baking simple gourmet pet treats for the Fido Bakery.  We'll provide you with easy recipes for treats like Bulldog Brownies, Green Bean Bites, and Snicker Poodles! To get involved contact Barb Mattison at BarbMattison@att.net

Auction Item Round-up: Black Tie & Tails is our premier fundraiser and raises nearly $100,000 annually. Auction items are key to our success!  We are looking for things you may have or have access to!  Extra tickets to theater shows; extra tickets to sports events; airline miles you've never used; gas cards, a vacation home for weekend or week use.  These are totally tax deductible donations!  The event is Friday. October 15, 2010 but the sooner we get items, the sooner we can promote them (and you!) on the Web.  Contact Isabelle Behm, 313.565.6020 or Isabelle@xceedsolutions.com

Education Team: Education is the name of the game! Inspire Friends: Humane Education is seeking folks to join the team! If you have a passion for education and love working with people this is the place for you! The actual time commitment depends how much time you are willing to commit. If you would like more information or are interested in joining the team contact Nick Beaven at njbeaven@gmail.com or call 313.563.3484 (e-mail is the best line of communication.)

Friday Donation Driver:  Every Friday, around 11:00 am, we have a donation of dog food that needs to be picked up from the Wal-Mart in Taylor and transported to the Shelter.  Some lifting will be required.  If you are interested, even in just one Friday a month, please contact Sue at dasclifton@aol.com

Operation Feed Fido

Operation Feed Fido program is looking for volunteers!  We are looking for volunteers who can commit approximately 3 hours on the first Saturday of every month to help with food distribution. Also maybe a few more hours in a month to meet with future members and explain the program and guide them through their first few weeks! Who knew that feeding Fido could be so rewarding? . If you are interested in helping out contact Nick Beaven at njbeaven@gmail.com or call 313.563.3484 (e-mail is the best line of communication.)
