Volunteer Orientation Information
Thank you for your interest in the Friends For the
Dearborn Animal Shelter. We ask all new volunteers to go through a volunteer
orientation.
Orientation sessions are not offered on a drop-in basis; you must contact the
shelter to sign up for an orientation date. Please
review the following schedule and contact the shelter at
313-943-2697.
Adult Orientation Sessions 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
The orientation session includes the following:
- An overview of the Friends organization and the shelter.
- Information packets that describe the various events and projects that benefit the animals, as well as contact information for the Project Leaders.
- A description of volunteer opportunities in the shelter and an In-Shelter Volunteer Handbook.
- Shelter tour and one-on-one time with the dogs and/or cats.
Please dress to work with the animals, no shorts or sandals.
Student Sessions (for volunteers under age 16)
1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
Because student volunteers work directly with shelter animals, orientations focus on safety issues and shelter rules. Student volunteers are specifically trained in cat and puppy handling as well as dog walking. There is a brief tour of the shelter and one-on-one time with the dogs and cats. Students are also given an information packet to take home, which includes a student volunteer Handbook. Please dress to work with the animals, no shorts or sandals.
Orientation Dates
- All sessions are done on Saturdays.
- Adult volunteer times are 10:00 am - 1:00 pm, Student Volunteer (under age 16) times are 1:00 pm - 2:30 PM.
