Learn How the Friends are Helping the Community

The Friends are working hard to help the community in need during this economic downturn, including our Operation Feed Fido, low-cost spay and neuter program, low-cost microchip clinics, and extending the Critter Invitational early bird ticket discount.  You'll read more about these below.

Here is some happy news ... you probably remember that we featured Blossom in our last eNews to you.  She is the wonderful little dog who was a victim of abuse and had to have her front leg amputated.  She is doing wonderfully well, is now in her new home, and you can read about and view her progress.  You may have seen Blossom featured in a Detroit News article on April 18, Abandoned by the Economy".

The Detroit News also did a companion article with Blossom's feature entitled "Abandoned pets overwhelm Metro Detroit shelters."  The animals being turned in are loved pets whose families, because of the economy, can no longer afford to keep them.   Our increased turn-in rate testifies to this sad fact and with your help, we continue to work diligently to find new loving homes for these abandoned pets.

Want to Help Support the Feed Fido Program?

We would appreciate your help with this and other homeless animal programs  - you may donate financially and/or by donating pet food and other wish list items which may be dropped off at the shelter during normal business hours.

But ... if you've ever been at the shelter for one of these turn-ins, you know how painful it is for the families, their beloved pets, and also our staff.  We prefer to avoid this heartache and are taking a proactive approach with a new community service program, Operation Feed Fido.   The purpose of Feed Fido is to assist  families experiencing hard times with a pet food bank so they can keep their beloved pets at home rather than turning them in.   Potential recipients must complete an application, be approved for the program, and agree to the program "rules".  Click here for a complete description of the Feed Fido program.

You or others you know may also wish to take advantage of our other community service programs:

Mutt Strut in May

Warm weather equals family-fun and dog-walking weather. We’re counting down to May 16, and the fourth annual Mutt Strut. We hope you are, too! But, don’t put off creating your personalized pledge page or check out all those who have pledge pages and help them achieve their pledge goals

We have a new feline-lovers Mutt Strut section this year -- Cat Nappers!!  Cats are letting the dogs do the walking on May 16, but they can still strut to raise funds through their own pledge page. Andrea Haag and kitty Merlin are registered as Cat-Nappers and have a goal of raising $500. According to Andrea: “My friend Merlin was adopted from the shelter about 6 years ago, and he's brought so much joy into my life. He wants to thank all who helped him at the Dearborn shelter, before he found a new home and friend.”

You can help spread the word to get more Mutt Strut pledgers - display or hand out the fliers (maybe while you are walking your dog to other dog owners you meet!!).  We appreciate whatever you can do to help!

Elvira Rivera is a second-year Mutt Strutter and Mom to Bella. Why does she strut? “My husband and I found our best friend, Bella, at the Dearborn Animal Shelter and we couldn't be happier. We've had Bella for going on a year now and we couldn't imagine life with out her.”  Elvira is an independent Mary Kay Consultant and if you book a party with her, she'll donate 25% to Mutt Strut.  Read more...
